Question: Why do your kids build a huge Star-Wars Multi-Teird Lego Universe on the stairs the day AFTER the marathon?  Answer:  Because it's just not funny enough already to watch you go down them.  Who knew I worked my quads that much?  I thought that because my effort was so easy, I'd escape the lactic acid build up. But I did keep an 8 minute pace (which is a good race pace for me) for about 15 miles. I guess that was enough.  Glad I could give them a laugh.

I am glad to hear that I am not the only one with a Star Wars Space Station in their house. One of the Tantooine big ugly animals tried to kill me on the stairs last week.

(I am glad that you did not die :)

I'm gonna try two miles tomorrow :) You are my ROCK!!!

You RAN two miles at 8 min pace? you didn't leave everything out there on the course on Fri? I can barely walk two miles. I told Larry that our next major home improvement involves some kinda motorized stairs. :)

No, no, no....on Saturday, I ran 15 of the 26.2 miles at an 8:15 pace which left me sore. I was surprized how sore I was because I eased up after 15 and felt overall that I had run an easy-breezy race. It wasn't until I was walking down the stairs Sunday, and trying to get out there on Monday that I realized HOW sore I was.

Glad you made it past Star Wars with no injuries, and glad to see you can make it a couple miles. That marathon recovery is a BEAST!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 17:59:59 from 64.81.245.109

The soreness is caused by the muscle tear from pounding, not by lactic acid. Marathon race pace produces very little lactic acid, and it quickly disappears when you stop or hit the wall and slow down to a jog.

I didn't know that. Is that why they say to eat good protein after a race? Does protein really help repair those tears?

From RAD on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 18:02:33 from 67.166.99.8

yes, protein is what repairs those tears...so go enjoy a nice steak :)

From marion on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 18:14:33 from 71.213.119.198

Yes, protein is essential to good muscle repair :) Mmmmm... salmon is my favorite :)

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 19:14:43 from 64.81.245.109

Protein does help, but you cannot force a fast recovery with large dozes of protein. Sleep helps as well. So does rest, massage, icing. But it is all a matter of time, it is like a wound, you can do some things to help it heal, but expect no miracle - it needs its time.
